Description
| Pennsylvania Railroad, or Pennsy, born out of the state of Pennsylvania wanting to jump on the bandwagon to streamline freight through the state, started its first route from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh in 1846. By 1882, Pennsy became the largest corporation in the world as it was also producing the most revenue and traffic along its tracks. Through major acquisitions across the North East and West to Illinois, PRR continued its success and eventually owned just short of 283,000 freight cars in 1919, around the time they started the major switch to electric. During World War II, Pennsy's freight traffic increased, along with its passengers, making the slow switch to diesel, before its merger with New York Central in 1968 which would become Penn Central Transportation Company, or Penn Central for short. These boxcars ran regularly from 1955-1975 and could be seen being pulled by 1st and 2nd generation diesel locomotives or late steam. These highly detailed and authentically liveried box cars are made using high-quality construction materials and come equipped with knuckle couplers and metal road wheels, featuring sliding doors. |
