Buying from Crazy Model Trains

Crazy Model Trains is an online-only retailer and sells on our website, eBay, and Amazon.

What to know about the different sites:

  • eBay and Amazon both charge a fee of ~15%, which means we must add that cost into the product price. You’ll pay more for the same product than if you buy directly from our website.
  • If you purchase from eBay or Amazon and later discover the item was cheaper on our site, we cannot credit you the difference.
  • Returns must be processed through the site you purchased from.

Using the Site

We aim to make your experience as easy as possible. Navigation is organized by Categories, Scale/Gauge, Item Type, and Brand. Use the filters on the left side of the site to narrow your search.

  • Search Tip: If you know the part number, use it—our search engine is optimized for that.
  • If an item is not listed, it is out of stock. We only display in-stock items.
  • Inventory is shared across our website, eBay, and Amazon. Updates may take 5–30 minutes. Oversells may occur and will be refunded. We do not backorder or accept pre-orders.
  • Product images are provided by the manufacturer. They may vary or show different details depending on production phase.
  • Manufacturers often use the same photo for different road numbers. Always rely on the title to determine the product and road number.

Ordering

  • Review your cart carefully, especially the Scale/Gauge. Over 50% of preventable returns result from wrong scale purchases.
  • Shipping costs are shown during checkout.
  • We verify addresses, phone numbers, and emails to prevent fraud. Use accurate information tied to your name.
  • We may contact you for high-value orders. A valid photo ID may be required.
  • We use PayPal for payment processing (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, AmEx, Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, PayPal Later).
  • Your billing address must match your credit card records. Three failed attempts will lock your account for 24 hours.
  • If declined, check with your bank before retrying.
  • No checks or money orders accepted.
  • We do not ship to:
    • Hotels, motels, or bed & breakfasts
    • Freight forwarders
    • Parcel lockers or non-residential forwarding services
  • Orders with restricted addresses may be canceled. If shipped, our responsibility ends when marked "delivered" by the carrier.
  • We reserve the right to cancel any order at any time for any reason.
  • We currently ship to the United States and Canada only.
  • Our website is secured with a GeoTrust Secure Certificate.

Order Cancellations

  • Orders incur a 3% transaction fee (non-refundable via PayPal).
  • If you cancel before shipping, you’ll be refunded 97%.
  • Incorrect or restricted addresses result in cancellation and a 3% fee.
  • If you cancel after shipping or refuse the package:
    • 15% restocking fee
    • Shipping cost is non-refundable

To avoid paying return shipping, refuse the package if possible.


Handling Time

  • Orders typically ship within one business day.
  • Early orders may ship the same day.
  • Warehouse closed weekends. Friday–Sunday orders ship Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday).

Packaging

  • Most items ship in boxes with protective materials.
  • Smaller, lightweight items may ship in padded poly bags.

Shipping Services

We use the lowest-cost method available:

  • USPS: Ground Advantage, Priority Mail
  • FedEx: Home Delivery, Ground
  • Items under 5 lbs. usually ship via USPS Ground Advantage
  • If Priority Mail is comparable or cheaper, we’ll use it
  • Items over 5 lbs. usually ship via FedEx
  • High-value orders (Over $600) may require Signature Confirmation. Contact us if that’s a concern.
  • Canadian orders ship via USPS or FedEx

Tracking Information

  • A valid email address is required to receive tracking info.
  • You’ll get a tracking number once your order ships.
  • Track directly on the carrier’s site.
  • Sometimes USPS marks items “Delivered” before actual delivery. If this happens:
    1. Wait one full business day.
    2. Then contact your local post office with the tracking number.
  • Carriers use GPS; your local post office may know exactly where the package was left.
  • If you still haven’t received it, please contact us.

Return & Refund Policy

We Offer a 30-Day Return Policy – See Below for Conditions

All refunds will be processed to the payment method originally used for the purchase or we can provide a store credit

Ordered the Wrong Item / Changed Mind

  • Do NOT open the item if you plan to return it.
  • No “try and buy” returns.
  • Contact Bill at 240-367-6067 or Bill@crazymodeltrains.com for an RMA.
  • After approval, return within 14 days.
  • Unopened items must:
    • Show no signs of use
    • Be in original packaging
    • Seals should not be cut or removed including Cellophane
    • Include a valid order number and reason
  • Restocking fees:
    • Up to 15% for unopened items
    • Up to 50% for opened items, depending on condition
  • Do not tape or write on product packaging.
  • Returns without RMA are rejected.
  • We may refuse returns not meeting these conditions.
  • Buyer pays return shipping.

Wrong Item Received

  • Contact us immediately and do not open the item.
  • We’ll send a return label.
  • We’ll ship the correct item (if in stock) or issue a full refund.

Damaged Items

  • Contact us immediately.
  • If possible please take clear photos of:
    • The damaged item
    • Outer packaging
    • Shipping label
  • Email or text photos to 240-367-6067.
  • We need this for carrier claims.

Defective Items

  • If defective out of the box, contact us for RMA and return label.
  • If defective after use, contact the manufacturer for warranty repair or replacement.

Train Set Policy (Large & Bulky Items)

Due to the size, weight, and cost of shipping:

  • All train set returns are strongly discouraged
  • Customer is responsible for ALL return shipping costs
  • Opened train sets are NOT returnable
  • Opened or Used sets will be refused or heavily deducted

All train sets are covered under the manufacturer warranty through Lionel, Bachmann, Kato, Marklin, or the respective manufacturer.

Any operational or mechanical issue must be handled directly through the manufacturer.


Non-Returnable Items

  • We are not responsible for minor manufacturer defects. Contact the manufacturer for:
    • Paint color variations
    • Glue marks
    • Smudges or cosmetic imperfections
  • Electronics and circuit boards (DCC Controllers, Decoders, any control circuit boards, etc.) must be returned to the manufacturer.
  • Electronics may be damaged by:
    • Static electricity
    • Short circuits
    • Incorrect wiring
    • Overloads or misuse

What to Include in All Returns

  • Your order number
  • Brief description of the issue
  • All original packing material
  • All paperwork that came with the item
