History
The Trinity Railcar 5161 covered hopper is a widely used railcar model designed for the efficient transport of bulk commodities such as grain, fertilizer, and other dry goods. Manufactured by Trinity Industries, the 5161 cubic foot covered hopper is known for its versatility and durability in freight operations.
The Trinity 5161 cubic foot covered hoppers were first introduced in the mid-1990s by Trinity Industries and have been widely produced since then. They became a popular choice for grain and bulk commodity transportation, competing with similar designs like the Thrall 5150 and ACF 5250 covered hoppers.
Production of the 5161 model continued into the 2000s, with various leasing companies, private owners, and railroads acquiring them. While newer hopper designs with higher capacities and improved aerodynamics have since emerged, many 5161 hoppers remain in active service today.
