By the late 1960s the Santa Fe's F-unit fleet was worn out while the railroad needed more than 200 units for secondary and branch work. The answer was to strip an F-unit to its engine deck, add deep side sills and GP7-style hoods, and send it back out as a CF7. The first came out of Cleburne, Texas in late 1969 and 232 more followed through 1978; many later went to short lines. Note that the sound-equipped version is a different item number, 70619. Rapido publishes no weight, so the figure is an estimate; country of manufacture is inferred as China.
