The prototype was one of the first standardized caboose designs built for multiple railroads, derived from 1920s Reading Railroad plans that in turn followed World War One era United States Railroad Administration specifications; the tall centered cupola gave the conductor a clear view along the train. Cars of this pattern served eastern roads into the 1980s, with some surviving in maintenance and switching service afterward.
